For once, I found myself with a little bit of time on my hands, and so I thought I'd scan some photos of my first trip to Alaska and the Russian Arctic back in '98, seeing as I haven't had the opportunity to show you any of these before. There are more where these came from of course, but here's a sampler:

 

This is me looking out over ice from the Columbia Glacier in Prince William Sound. It was, as you can probably tell, a misty, cold morning. At this very moment, I am probably thinking, "Wow, it would be really neat to be back on board ship and having breakfast right about now."

 

But there were also some really cool moments in Prince William Sound,like seeing this orca   

 

 

After bumbling around Prince William Sound for a while, we spent a few weeks visiting Native villages along the Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort Sea coasts. This is a view of an  Eskimo village, Deering, on Kotzebue Sound in the Bering Sea
